Skullcandy Smokin’ Buds 2 review
Skullcandy is a lifestyle audio company who manufactures products often described as the world’s coolest headphones and earbuds by its loyal followers.
Their products cater to the young because of its appealing, colorful and hip designs.
To further amplify their reputation as the trendiest among other like companies, the brand loves to do collaborations with known celebrities from extreme sports such as skateboarding and motocross.
They have also done collaborations with artists like Jay-Z, Mix Master Mike, Snoop Dogg and Metallica. In the beginning, the company churned out headphones but later included earphones in their line.
One of the most lauded products from the brand is the Smokin’ Buds 2 wireless earbuds. The name sounds catchy enough, but are its features worth buying? We’ll soon find out and decide after this review.
The audio quality is decent, but not enough to make you sing praises over it.
The midrange was evenhanded while clearness of the tracks and the high-end aspects fell off.
The bass stood out from the rest however, it presented a peculiar, distorted, inaudible quality that must have been an effect of the device’s Supreme Sound feature.
The bass effect was not bad at all, however, it can be distracting and eventually overwhelming.
One can get overwhelmed from listening to audio tracks at greater volumes since the strange bass effect overthrows the music. Rock tracks suffer the most but the effect was not easily discernible on majority of pop music tracks though.
However, this is heaven-sent for rap and hip-hop lovers or other genres who employ maximum bass details.
Design and Comfort
The brand is well-known in the industry for their loud, lasting designs and efficient headphones, usually marketed to younger audiences and extreme sports fans.
There is nothing subtle about the company’s product designs; the colors are usually bright, Crayola hues studded with pop culture graphics and emblazoned with the company’s skull logo.
You will usually know that a headphone comes from Skullcandy because of its design, but will their aesthetic extend to the Buds 2 wireless?
Surprisingly, the device only comes in 3 hues, two of them color combinations.
You can choose from black and chrome, black and red or minimal white. A pleasant surprise for those who are into the brand’s super-bass effects but hesitant with their designs; now they have Skullcandy earbuds they can truly enjoy and wear without shame.
The model features a removable neckband which the brand terms as a “flex collar.”
You can decide whether you need the rubberized band (it fastens on your neck and provides a light, gentle grip) or choose to get rid of the part that encloses the electronics and the charging port and wear the device without the neck band.
There is also a downsized clip for managing the cord which lets wearers take away any limp cord so the device will fit you securely.
It has a control panel located along the even, flat cord by the left side.
This control panel has a microphone and a 3-button remote control. The main button manages the power, play and pause, Bluetooth pairing and phone call functions while the + and – buttons manage track navigation and the volume.
The volume control operates together with the master volume levels that’s on your phone.
While unboxing, you will notice that the earphones only include 2 pairs of ear tips, ranging from big and small.
A storage pouch is also not included. Apart from the additional selection of ear tips and a clip, you will get a micro-USB to USB charging cable which can link to the part clinging on the device’s neckband.
The Bluetooth feature reconnects automatically in a snap and its range is excellent as well.
Skullcandy claims battery life can last for up to 6 hours. As tested, the battery life will basically rely the volume of the playback. The higher the volume, the more it uses up juice.

The general design of the Smokin’ Buds 2 was praised for its clean and simple lines.
The company’s skull logo on the earbuds weren’t a garish silver but instead it was a classy, matte silver. The cables were thick and flat, which proved to be resistant to tangling.
Most users have also said that the silicone ear tips fit most of their ears well and was comfortable to use for a prolonged time. It did not provide slippage, nor did irritate the ears.
Charging the device was straightforward and fast, thanks to the USB cable included in the package. Pairing by means of Bluetooth to phones was also simple and easy.
Once you are connected, you can employ the device for calls or listen to your favorite audio tracks.
Its range was exceptional, as one user noted. It works well as long as you have great line of sight to your unit.
As for the sound, this is going to be a runaway hit for bass enthusiasts because of the boosted low-end effect it sends out.
There were a few gripes though. One complained that the earbuds dangle and do not draw in. A certain user also suggested that the cables can benefit from a few inches more.
It would also be good if the company adds two more sets of silicone ear tips to the package.
